international footballer begins a prison sentence of five years for the rape of a teenage girl who was too drunk to consent to sex with him.

The Sheffield United and Wales striker Ched Evans was convicted of raping the 19-year-old, after a night of partying in a seaside town. His friend and fellow professional footballer, Clayton McDonald, was acquitted of the charge itself.

The court heard that the men, both 23, admitted having sex with the girl, but the prosecution argued he was too drunk to consent.

A jury at Caernarfon Crown Court said McDonald, a Port Vale player, after nearly five hours of deliberations. His family and friends in the public gallery responded by shouting. "Yes," Evans wept as the jury returned the guilty verdict against him.

Evans imprisonment, Judge Hughes QC Merfyn said. "The plaintiff was 19 years old and was extremely intoxicated, the jury found that she was not able to have sex should realize that .."

He told Evans that could be used to attract the attention of women, because of their success, but the case was "very different". The judge added: "He threw successful career in which he was involved."

Nita Dowell, Senior Crown Prosecutor in Wales, said: "Ched Evans took advantage of a vulnerable young woman who was not able to give consent to sexual activity

"It is a myth that being vulnerable through alcohol means that the victim is somehow responsible for the violation of the law is clear .. Being vulnerable by alcohol or the drug does not consent "

During his testimony, Evans from St Asaph in North Wales, told the jury he had 13 caps for Wales and scored 35 goals for Sheffield United, currently second in League One this season. At the time of the alleged assault, he had been seeing his girlfriend for about 18 months and he was still with her.

Evans denied forcing the woman to have sex and insisted he was conscious. Asked what state he was, he said: "She had been drinking but was not drunk." He said he was "under control".
But in an interview with the police, the woman said she had no memory of how he arrived at the hotel. She drank four vodkas double shot of sambuca.
